Citrus Oils : Liquid Chromatography

چکیده

Citrus essential oils are very complex matrices which contain numerous compounds of different chemical classes. These compounds are generally divided into two fractions: the volatile fraction, which is the most representative, and ranges between 85 and 99% in the different cold-pressed citrus oils, and the non-volatile residue, which ranges between 1 and 15%. The development of new instrumental analytical techniques, mainly chromatographic, has allowed the characterization of citrus essential oils to become more precise. Gas chromatography is an essential tool for the study of the volatile fraction, while liquid chromatography (thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with spectral absorption and Suorescence measurements) is widely used for the study of the composition of the non-volatile residue. This fraction consists largely of oxygen heterocyclic compounds (coumarins, psoralens (furanocoumarins) and polymethoxylated Savones) that exhibit strong absorption in the ultraviolet region ( max about 315 nm). The presence of coumarin compounds is widespread in plants of the Rutaceae family to which the citrus species belong. Their presence is qualitatively and quantitatively different in the different citrus oils, so knowledge of the oxygen heterocyclic fractionmay be useful to assess authenticity, the geographical origin and the possible adulteration of the oils. Figure 1 shows the basic structures of the oxygen heterocyclic compounds present in citrus oils. In the numbered position, coumarins and psoralens may contain hydroxyl, methoxyl, isopentenyl, isopentenyloxy, geranyloxy groups; polymethoxylated Savones contain methoxyl groups. Table 1 lists the oxygen heterocyclic compounds identiRed in citrus oils.

Profi ling of Citrus Oils and Determination of Furocoumarins in Citrus Oils Using the Agilent 1290 Infi nity 2D-LC Solution

Comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC×LC) using the Agilent 1290 Infi nity 2D-LC Solution with DAD and MS detection is applied for the analysis of citrus oils. The developed method uses normal phase liquid chromatography in the fi rst dimension and reversed-phase liquid chromatography in the second dimension. This combination provides good orthogonality and is valuable for pro...

Traditional Small-Size Citrus from Taiwan: Essential Oils, Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity

Background: The calamondin (Citrus microcarpa Bunge) and the kumquat (Fortunella crassifolia Swingle) are two small-size citrus fruits that have traditionally been consumed in Taiwan; however, there has been a lack of scientific research regarding the active compounds and functionalities of these fruits. Methods: Analysis of volatile composition of essential oil and phytosterol was carried out ...

Chemical composition of the essential oils of variegated pink-fleshed lemon (Citrus x limon L. Burm. f.) and their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities.

The volatile secondary metabolites of essential oils from fruit peel and leaves of variegated pink-fleshed lemon (Citrus x limon) were investigated using GLC and GLC-MS (gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy). Altogether 141 compounds were identified and quantified, accounting for 99.59% and 96.33% of the total hydrodistilled peel and leaf oil, respectively. Limonene occurred in higher am...

Volatile and Flavonoid Composition of the Peel of Citrus medica L. var. Corsican Fruit for Quality Assessment of Its Liqueur.

The volatile and flavonoid compositions of the peel of Citrus medica L. var. Corsican fruits cultivated in Corsica were studied according to the maturity of the citron fruits measured using growing degree-days. Quantitative variation with the stage of development of the fruit was observed using gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry...

The Effect of Citrus Essential Oils and Their Constituents on Growth of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri.

Citrus bacterial canker (CBC) caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), is the most devastating of the citrus diseases worldwide. During our study, we found that Essential oils (EOs) of some citrus cultivars are effective on Xcc. Therefore, it prompted us to determine the plant metabolites responsible for the antibacterial properties. We obtained EOs from some locally cultivated citrus by...
